Wied Fulija, a former landfill in operation from 1979 to 1996, covering 91,000m² and holding 1.85 billion kilograms of waste, has been transformed into a green public area. In August 2019, WasteServ initiated a €4.5 million EU-funded project to rehabilitate the site by planting 43,000 trees and shrubs, stabilizing and landscaping the waste mounds, and constructing pathways for public access. The area now supports local biodiversity, including the endemic Maltese honey bee and Scopoli’s Shearwater. The project restored the land to its natural state, creating a relaxing green space for residents and visitors.
