More Information

This historic site is the main ditch between the strong defensive walls of Birgu’s fortifications, part of the Knights’ defenses around Malta’s harbors, and is protected as a cultural heritage site. In January 2016, Birgu Ditch reopened after restoration, featuring comfortable walkways that lead between the massive walls to a restored casemated battery, a caponier, and an old sally port leading to Kalkara village. Visitors can see several entrances in the walls, some used as WWII bomb shelters and others dating back to the Knights of St. John when a countermine gallery existed. To help visitors understand the site’s architecture and history, interpretation panels are placed along the walkways in a clear, simple style.
